| Pakistan, Australia Announce Intention To Sign DTA |
by Lorys Charalambous, Tax-News.com, Cyprus
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
At its second meeting, the Pakistan-Australia Joint Trade Committee decided
upon the signing of a double tax agreement, and discussed the removal of tariffs
on Pakistani goods to the Australian market.
The joint forum was first established in 2007, but as yet has made little progress
towards achieving its goals, among them removing barriers to trade. The two
parties agreed to more regular meetings to realize increased trade ties, and
also identified agriculture and investment as areas where increased cooperation
would be beneficial to both parties.
The heads of the respective countries’ delegations, Australian First
Assistant Secretary Deborah Stokes, and Pakistan’s Himayatullah Khan,
who heads the Department of Agronomy, agreed that an initial step to this end
would be the signing of an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation, which
would facilitate increased trade flows and investment.
During the meeting, the Pakistani delegation urged a review of tariffs on certain imports Pakistani
goods to Australia, particularly mangoes, citrus, apples and dates, to increase access to the Australian market for Pakistan's farmers.
Concluding, the delegations agreed to hold the next meeting in 2011 in Australia,
and hold JTC meetings on a yearly basis henceforth.
