| Clegg Campaigns For 'Fairer' UK Taxes |
by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London
Thursday, January 05, 2012
The government must make sure the tax system is fair, the Deputy Prime Minister
has said, stressing that he hopes progress can be made on a general anti-avoidance
rule.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, Nick Clegg said he wished to see
more action in this direction in future Budgets. He commented on what he sees
as justifiable public anger at the existence of "a wealthy elite of large
businesses who can pay an army of tax accountants to get out of paying their
fair share of tax, who basically treat paying tax as an optional extra where
you can pick and choose the taxes you pay".
Clegg stressed that this led him to insist, upon entry into the coalition government
in May, 2010, on a UK clampdown on tax evasion. Among the measures he advocates
is a general anti-avoidance rule. For Clegg, this would signal that "you
can't get away with playing the system, and you can't abuse the system."
Clegg confirmed the government's receipt of a report by Graham Aaronson, detailing
the feasibility of a so-called 'anti-abuse rule' and hoped that progress can
be made in this area in future government budgets. He concluded: "We have got to make sure the tax system is fair,
and seen to be fair."
